Urumi - Short review

In short, I loved the movie.

I wouldn't go into the specifics and dissect the movie to do a review.
The obvious catch has been the visual treat and the music, and some good acting by Genelia,Prithvi,Prabhudeva,Nithya, Jagathy and Ankur Sharma.

The visuals are awesomely stunning. I don't think anyone else in Indian film industry can match the exemplary standards of visual treatment set by Santhosh Sivan in this movie. The greenery, the mist, the mud, the water, the fight ... Am just short of words when it comes to talking about the experience. You gotta see it to understand what I am talking about.

Some of my friends felt the plot lacked punch, but I would see it this way - Its a simple and direct narrative about a guy who wants to take revenge on Vasco da gamma and the way the director has treated the story definitely does justice to this narrative.

Coming to the acting, I never ever thought Genelia could pull off this character! But, I am impressed. Her face did more of the talking and am told that she went through actual kalari training, and I say it has paid off. Prithvi hasn't done a bad job. I really enjoyed the on-screen chemistry between Prabhudeva and Nithya Menen. I am sure Nithya Menen will in the coming years become an asset to the Malayalam (read southern - she has already done films in Telugu and Kannada) film industry. She handles the role beautifully and the playful portrayal of Chirakkal Bala is commendable! A lot of other characters require mention here, I particularly liked the Jagathy in his Chanakyan style portayal and Ankur sharma's charcter of Chirakkal Bhanu.

I have been glued to Urumi songs since the release and the visuals does extreme justice to it. I loved the way Santhosh has brought alive water in so many of his scenes! Amazing it was! Special mention to Deepak Dev for utilising the folk music really well! I loved ALL the songs, am still glued to all of them since the time of its release! Not to forget the way Kannur colloquial language has been used - particularly in the songs - Chimmi chimmi ( I hear it as Chinni chinni, but the credits say it as chimmi chimmi) and Aaaranne aaranne (Amrita Superstar runner up Job Kurian gets a break with this)!

Go ahead and watch it, liking it or not liking it, will depend on your tastes, but you will for sure enjoy the visuals! :)

Rating 4/5 :)

Ciao!
